What to expect

After a relaxing cruise over to Saona, the sightseeing can begin in earnest. You'll cruise the shoreline of the Cotubanama National Park while your local guide points out the island wildlife. See the rocks of El Peñón, and then glide through the Catuano channel. Next, it's time to cool off in the azure water of the natural pools, formed by sandbanks in the open sea. The excursion was oversubscribed. There were not enough seats on the large bus making it very difficult for people to get seated and parties were split up. The speedboat was the same, not enough space and really crammed in every last available place. Lunch was good and free time on the island was good and drinks were free flowing. Overall a good day but suggest numbers are limited a bit less.

The island was nice. It’s portrayed that it’s a whole day on the island but it really isn’t. We were the last hotel that got picked up and that was at 07:40 we didn’t get on the island until 13:40. That’s 6 hours travelling to the island with a tour guide which was advertised as English, but spoke Spanish all day with the occasional bit of English. Tour guide said to meet at 15:30 at the food area to get picked up and he left on the first boat without telling any of the English where to go.

You'll see sites dating back to the 15th century and visit the Gothic Cathedral of Santa Maria and the Alcazar de Colon, which belonged to Christopher Columbus's family. You'll find out more about the complex history of the island with a 4D cinema experience recounting the storming of the city on New Year's Day in 1586 by English privateers led by Francis Drake.Next, hop aboard a mini-train for a tour of the colonial zone before stopping for lunch. You'll drive through winding rural dirt tracks through plantations all the way to the famous Domitai Cave Park and a replica Taino village. Luis, one of our local guides, says, ‘We are the world's largest producer of organic, fair trade cocoa. Around half of our cocoa is made into the finest chocolate you can buy. So, trying traditional cocoa products in a Dominican farm is a real treat, even if you don't have a sweet tooth.'Kick off with some mud-splattered, high-octane fun as you ride cross-country to a cenote cave for a swim in the Domitai Cave Park. These sinkholes with clear, fresh water are perfect for a cooling dip. As it's a private venue, there are fewer crowds and vendors than at other cenotes. You'll also get to savour some local specialities such as empanadas and pineapple wine. Half-day tour to Xploration Animal Park with local guide

This half-day trip to Xploration Animal Park has family fun stamped all over it. Don't believe us? One of our guides, Noel, gives it his own seal of approval. ‘I'm a father of four, and because we live close to the park, it's one of our favourite places to visit. Whenever I'm guiding this tour, I arrive with a smile on my face, knowing I'll be spending the day surrounded by beautiful landscapes and incredible animals.' You'll be picked up and taken on a scenic voyage into the hills of Nisibon in the northeast of the Dominican Republic. On arrival at Xploration, there's a presentation on the park from one of our expert guides. It's Noel's favourite part of the tour. ‘I love explaining the differences between our animals and how they help us work the land,' he says.Jump aboard the bus for a panoramic drive around the park, or head out on foot to find your own hidden viewpoints over the landscape. You'll spot the likes of rabbit, deer, ostrich and emu, plus see cows being milked. Enjoy a drink and snack as well as time to meet the farm animals, including goats, sheep and pigs. What's more, all visits support the park's dog rescue shelter. And, as the heat ramps up, cool down with the option to kayak, paddleboard or bamboo raft. For Noel, this part of the experience brings back great memories. He says, ‘When I was younger, my family and I used to come and fish at the River Maimon.
